Basic Grits


  • 1 cup stone-ground grits
  • 3 cups water or low-sodium broth
  • 2 tsp kosher salt
  • ½ cup milk or half and half
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • Apply a thin layer of cooking spray to the base of the Instant Pot to keep grits from sticking.
  • Add 1 cup of yellow or white stone-ground grits, 3 cups water or low sodium broth, and 2 tsp salt to pot.
  • Close and lock the lid and turn the steam release handle to Sealing.
  • Select Pressure Cook and cook for 10 Minutes.
  • Then allow for 15 Minutes Natural Release.
  • Flip valve to quick-release any remaining pressure.
  • Remove lid and using a whisk, stir in milk, melted butter, and black pepper to remove any clumps.
  • Serve warm.
