Why doesn’t Alexa understand me?
Here are some tips if Alexa does not understand your requests.
Keep in mind
For Alexa to work, you need an active Wi-Fi connection. An active Wi-Fi connection means that Alexa can stream music and other media from the Cloud, and answer your questions or process your requests.
Place your Alexa device in an ideal location
- Make sure your Alexa device is at least eight inches away from walls or other objects that may cause interference (such as microwave ovens or baby monitors).
- If your Alexa device is on the floor, move it to a higher location.
Be clear
- Make sure there is as little background noise as possible when you speak to Alexa.
- Speak naturally and clearly to Alexa.
- Repeat your question or request.
You can also do Voice Training
You can use Voice Training on compatible devices to help Alexa understand your speech patterns better. During a Voice Training session, the Alexa app shows 25 different phrases, which you say to your device.
Voice Training
How do I start voice training with Alexa?
Use Voice Training in the Alexa app to improve the speech recognition on your Alexa device.
At this time, you can only use Voice Training with Echo, Echo Dot, and Amazon Tap. Other Alexa devices (including Fire TV devices) do not support Voice Training.
During a Voice Training session, you’ll be prompted to say 25 different phrases to your Alexa device. Your device processes every phrase you say, even if you don’t finish a session. For best results:
- Speak normally to your Alexa device.
- Sit or stand where you typically speak to your Alexa device.
- If you have a voice remote, do not use it during Voice Training.
To start a Voice Training session:
- Open the Alexa app.
- Go to the menu and select Settings.
- Scroll to the Accountssection, and select Voice Training.
- Select Start Session.
- Speak the phrase on-screen when prompted, then select Nextto continue to the next phrases. To repeat a phrase, select Pause, and then Repeat Phrase.
- When you reach the end of your session, select Complete.
Tip: If you need to end your session at any time, select Pause, and then End session.
