Every year on March 8 we celebrate International Women’s Day, honoring the achievements of women in all areas of life. For over a century, this day has been a time to reflect on the social, economic, cultural, and political status of women. We look at all the ways that people have worked towards a more gender-balanced world, and highlight all the things that still need work.
“Balance for Better” is the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, as organizers seek to make greater progress towards a more gender-balanced world. We completely support this message, and we hope that in some small way every Instant Pot helps work towards this goal.
Many point to the invention of the washing machine as a pivotal moment for women. That one device saved so much labor that the people who had been spending hours and hours scrubbing clothes by hand — women – were freed to do other things. Other inventions that have had a huge impact on the status of women by saving time and effort have targeted other work typically done by women: cooking. The refrigerator and the microwave oven are great examples, and so is the Instant Pot.
At Instant Pot, we believe that our electric pressure cooker can also help liberate women and bring more balance to the world.
The good news is that things are changing, and more and more men are doing household chores. In Canada, married men did 35% of the daily work in the kitchen in 2015, up from only 14% in 1986. (Source: Statistics Canada) It’s an improvement, but it means that women still do the lion’s share of cooking. Anyone who is responsible for preparing meals for a family knows that it isn’t easy, and it takes a lot of time; it’s hard to find balance when women spend so much time stirring pots.
The Instant Pot helps revolutionize meal preparation by making cooking faster and easier. When you can just put your ingredients into a cooker, press a button, then walk away, you are free to do a lot of other things with your time. That brings balance in a whole lot of ways.
Join us this week as we celebrate the equality of women on International Women’s Day, and help balance for better.
